Neumann TLM170
The first model in the transformerless fet100 series
- Neumann's first transformerless microphone (TLM) for 48V phantom power
- can handle very high sound pressure levels (up to 144 dB), with pad 154 dB (!)
- equipped with the K89 capsule already used in the U89
- five directional characteristics (omnidirectional, wide cardioid, cardioid, hypercardioid, figure-8)
- broadband presence reduction that is even more sonically distinctive than the related, but brighter-sounding U89
- particularly popular in classical and jazz
- two items for hire
- manufacturing period: since 1983
Favourite Applications: All sources that tend to be sharp and/or very loud. First choice for brass instruments (horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba). Also very suitable for use on drums as an overhead microphone and in front of the bass drum. For vocals, its ‘smoothing’ sound is particularly recommended for overly present and hissing voices.
